From its headquarters in Monroe, Michigan, L-Z-Boy employs more than 5,000 workers at five manufacturing facilities, four distribution locations, and almost 70 retail stores nationwide. La-Z-Boy Furniture - The Beginning
Lazy-Z-Boy, in one incarnation or another, has been making quality furniture since 1927 when cousins Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker went into business together. In 1928, they devised a wood-slat porch chair with a reclining mechanism. Their chair was so comfortable that an upholstered, all-weather version soon followed. Sometimes great ideas have humble beginnings, and the original prototype for the La-Z-Boy recliner may have been made partially from orange crates, but the concept of a more comfortable seating solution was sound. The cousins partnered in a new furniture business in 1929, specializing in their latest invention, the recliner.
Making a new type of chair called for a unique and catchy name. The newly formed Floral City Furniture Company held a contest to name its popular chair, and after evaluating entries like the Sit-N-Snooze, the name La-Z-Boy was selected and trademarked. The first version of the metal recliner mechanism for the La-Z-Boy was patented in 1931.

In 1969, Lazy Boy Furniture expanded its product line beyond recliners to include other types of residential furniture, like reclining sofas and modular groups. Today they offer a full line of furnishings, including home theatre seating, tables, ottomans, and home décor items.
