Refinishing Resin Patio Furniture

Refinishing resin patio furniture is a relatively painless process that will keep your outdoor pieces looking fresh throughout several seasons. While in the past resin furnishings were considered cheap and flimsy, today there are some excellent options on the market that are both beautiful and long-lasting.

Many resin furnishings are made from a strong polymer that is UV protected and heavy enough to withstand the rigors of inclement weather. Some manufacturers are using an environmentally friendly material called EnviroWood, which is a synthetic made from recycled plastic bottles.

These materials are incredibly durable, won't crack like wooden outdoor furnishings, will retain their color in the sun, and won't rust. However, like all outdoor furnishings they will need a little care and maintenance to keep their color and luster. Dust and dirt and other elements in the air will start a chemical reaction with the resin and make your furnishings look dingy and weathered.

Cleaning Resin Patio Furniture

Basic care for resin patio furniture calls for only a basic soap and warm water bath every once in awhile. Take a bucket of dishwashing soap and water, give the pieces a good bath and then rinse with clean warm water.

Alternatively you can also just give your pieces a good hose down when you are watering the lawn. If your furniture has stains or is beginning to show some wear and tear try the following methods:

  • Extend the life of your new resin furniture by rubbing auto paste wax, which will keep dust and dirt from clinging to the resin. The wax provides extra UV protection just like a sunscreen
  • Spills need to be cleaned up as soon as possible so they don't have time to sink in and permanently stain your furnishings
  • As an alternative to soap and water, you can also use a paste of baking soda and water, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off
  • For tough stains use a mixture of water, bleach and dishwashing soap. Let sit at least 10 minutes and rinse
  • Scuff marks can be whisked away with a paste of water and Ajax cleanser, rub on then rinse

Refinishing Resin Patio Furniture

To truly give your resin patio furniture a new finish and shine, you will need a little more elbow grease, some orange oil and a little auto detailer.

  1. Wash each piece down with water to rinse off the dirt and grime
  2. With a soft cloth clean your furniture with orange oil. Don't use anything abrasive or it will scratch the finish
  3. Let your pieces dry thoroughly and then use a spray-on auto detailer to mist your furnishings. Let sit for a few minutes and then rub off with a soft cloth.

Using orange oil and auto detailer in refinishing resin patio furniture can really make it gleam.
