Couches are expensive pieces of furniture, so rather than replacing them when your couch cushions start to break down, you might want to get some couch cushion replacement foam.
As time goes by, you might find yourself sinking deeper and deeper into the couch. This happens naturally with time and doesn't mean that your sofa is poor quality. It's simply an indication of time and usage. Rather than purchasing replacement cushions or even a new sofa, try fixing the cushions by replacing the foam. It's easy to do and can be very cost effective. You can get back that "just like new" look and feel without spending a fortune. Best of all, the project can often be done in less than an hour.
Foam comes in thick pieces and thin rolls, so you can purchase different varieties depending on your needs.
Add Foam to Sofa Cushions
Adding extra foam is the easiest way to firm up couch cushions. If your sofa cushions have zippers it's very easy to add extra foam. Simply unzip the cover and add the desired amount of foam to what's already there. Foam comes in firm, medium, and soft density versions, as well as different thicknesses, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. You can add one piece, or layer a few around the existing cushion until you get the desired effect. Stuffing the cushion with cotton batting is another option, but the result isn't usually as effective as foam.
Replace Cushion Foam
If the interior of the cushion is in really bad shape you might want to consider completely replacing the foam. Either purchase it new from a local fabric store or order it online.
If ordering foam online, take the measurements of each cushion and order foam that is equal to or larger than what's needed. If there's any doubt, always order a size larger than needed because it can be cut down if necessary. Some companies will cut foam to order, so if you have an L-shaped cushion (or some other complicated shape) you might want to consider having the foam custom cut.
How to Cut Couch Cushion Replacement Foam
If you're going to cut the foam yourself follow these easy steps:
- Remove the old foam cushions from the covers.
- Place the old foam on top of the new and trace an outline on the new piece with a marker to make a pattern.
- Using a knife and cutting at a 90-degree angle, cut along the pattern. If possible use an electric knife that will make a cleaner cut (it's also easier).
- Once the pieces are cut, put the old covers on them. The cushions will be firmer, thicker, and look almost like new.

Fix Cushions Sooner Rather Than Later
No matter what, if you find that the cushions on your couch are sagging, make sure to get them fixed or replaced. Not only is it uncomfortable for you and bad for the couch, it can be bad for your back if you are continually slouched down without the right support.
Often it can be as simple as replacing the foam, but if the rest of your couch is in bad shape it might be time to replace the entire thing. Don't waste time and money on fixing the cushions if it's not going to solve the problem. Once the frame starts breaking down, no amount of foam will be able to make it better.
Replacing the old materials with couch cushion replacement foam refreshes an old sofa. It doesn't take a lot of time or money and it can make an old piece of furniture look and feel brand new.
